The beach at Caseville, MI

Goderich, Ontario, Canada

After a night at the Michigan State Park near Caseville, I continued South along the shore line of Lake Huron with my mornings destination Port Huron MI, where I would cross the Blue Water Bridge into Canada, hopefully by noon.

But, my plans were sidetracked, again, when I spotted a private house built to resemble a lighthouse, then within a few yards was a road sign pointing the way to Lighthouse Park and Campgrounds. I just had to investigate..

Turning off M25 and down the side road I quickly had to jam on the brakes as a young deer was standing in the middle of the road just waiting for me to make its picture. But just as I got my camera in hand it bolted to the ditch.

Continuing on I eventually came to the Lighthouse Park entrance where I was pleasantly surprised to find one of the nicest campground I had yet to see on this trip. Campers could park their rigs right up to the shoreline giving the a ‘million dollar view’ of the lake. Nearby was the Pointe Aux Barques lighthouse and museum open for exploring.

The Pointe Aux Barques facility was also built as an aid station and at one time consisted of more than 14 buildings that were used as refuges for stranded or shipwrecked sailors and played an important role in the rescue of many sailors during the storm of 1913.

The 1913 storm, known to this day as “THE STORM” churned up 45 foot waves and feet of snow in blizzard conditions, and is the worst in the history of the Great Lakes. Many lives were lost, and many were saved as well through the heroics of the men who manned this station.

Crossing the St Claire River at the southern tip of Lake Huron and waiting for the OK from Canadian Customs Inspectors to enter their country and the city of Sarnia, Ontario. From that point I traveled to east about 60 miles to the city of London then north to get back to the southeast shore of Lake Huron at the town of Goderich, ON.

Leaving Michigan -- Entering Canada

The Port of Goderich, Ontario also played an equally important roll, of life saving efforts during “THE STORM” of 1913
