Day 2: July 7, 2010

Auburn Indiana to Grand Haven Michigan,    Total Indirect Miles: 221

Road Trip Around The

            UPPER GREAT LAKES....

My intention for this entire trip, around the upper Great Lakes, is to avoid all expressway / interstate highways by only traveling on the US and State roads, but sometimes I was forced onto an expressway. I could not wait to get back on the secondary roads.

Auburn, Indiana:

After spending the night at a campground near Garrett, IN (about 8 miles West of Auburn) I headed for the historic Auburn- Cord- Duesenberg Automobile Museum complex in Auburn, where I spent about half the day, before hitting the road North into Michigan where I would spend the night at a beach-front state park campground at Grand Haven, MI.

The cars on display in the A - C - D Museum are not only works of art they are also priceless, (at least to the average person)

There is not enough space on this page to post all the photos I made during my visit, so here are a few of what I consider to be some of the outstanding cars on display...

1931 Cord roadster.

with brushed aluminum ‘brightwork’ once owned buy some of the richest men in America.

The original car was lost in a fire at the Las Angels Auto Show...

The Auburn Indiana region may be  the epicenter of car museums. In addition to the A - C - D there are no less than nine museums that include displays of trucks, farm implements, military aircraft, railroad trains, private aircraft, automotive art, race cars, and early Fords.

In addition the original business district of Auburn has a number of restored buildings. It would be easy to spend a week, or more, in the area...

From Auburn, Indiana to Grand Haven MI:

After spending most of the day at the museum in Auburn I headed north into Michigan, again traveling on secondary roads and eventually getting onto the Blue Star Route that hugs the shoreline of Lake Michigan.

On the Blue Star the sights included blueberry and raspberry farms where you can pick your own berry’s.

The small town of Douglas is home of the Steamship “KEEWATIN” now a maritime museum, and a huge marina full of pleasure boats of all sizes. across the bay is the town of Saugatuck where tourists fight for parking on the main streets to window shop the upscale art and clothing shops...

After passing through the city of Holland, MI I made my way to Grand Haven, where the lighthouses are the big attraction, especially for an evening walk along the inlet.

Come back to this site often and ride along with me around the Upper Great Lakes.

New photos will be posted every day or two..
